A Brief History of Our School

John Paul II: School of Polish Language & Culture held its first classes on March 5th, 2006 at Queen of Peace Academy in Gainesville, Florida.

Polish families in the Gainesville community have attended informal Polish classes and gatherings for years, led by Slawa Maslanka.  These families have also participated in holiday and cultural celebrations, including a showcase of Polish culture at St. Augustine Church, before the formal John Paul II: School of Polish Language & Culture was established. Most of the members, teachers, and administrators of this school have known each other for years, and many of the children have grown up together.  John Paul II: School of Polish Language & Culture, as a result, is a family oriented school that welcomes new members from the entire community.

The idea of a formal school was proposed by Dorota Andraka, the director of the Polish Schools along the East Coast of America.  Margaret Andraka and Barbara Andraka were voted directors of the school, and the administration of the new school began.  John Paul II: S.P.L.C. is affiliated with the Polish Supplementary School Council of America, Inc. in New York, which is in contact with the Polish Ministry of Education and Science.  The school receives books and curriculum guidelines from the Polish Teachers Association in America, Inc.
